It is a comprehensive test that looks at the health of your gut microbiome with attention to parasitic, viral and bacterial pathogens that can cause leaky gut and contribute to chronic illness. What Is Functional Health?
Functional health is a big term to unpack. It refers to the body’s ability to perform everyday functions at an optimal level. A sick body in poor health tends to perform inefficiently and experiences chronic fatigue and frequent illness. Common symptoms are bloating, diarrhea, constipation, feeling brain fog, feeling of fatigue, unexplained rashes or even acne, amongst others.
Think of the human body as a complex machine with many different systems and moving parts. If any part of any system breaks down or stops working efficiently, it impacts the functionality of the entire machine. That’s why it’s so important to ensure good functional health.

How Important Is Gut Health to Overall Health?
The importance of gut health cannot be overstated. The gut, skin, and brain share the same initial layer formed in the developing fetus. Usually if one of the three is off, you can tell it from the function of one of the others.
Chemicals and toxins surround us in everything we do, eat, or drink. Repeated exposure to these substances increases your chance of having an issue. Many chronic health problems share a link with poor gut health, including obesity, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, and type 2 diabetes.1 People with poor functional health often have an overload of undesirable bacteria in their digestive tracts.
The body is full of different microbiomes (little colonies of microbes). The microbiomes of your gut and skin in your gut play an impressively big role in your immune system, your ability to detoxify, and your overall health. Bacterial, viral, and parasitic imbalances or overgrowth play a huge role in symptomology.
What Are Symptoms of Poor Gut Health?
- Sudden food allergies
- Chronic fatigue
- Abdominal pain
- Skin rashes
- Unexplained changes in bowel habits
- Unhealthy food cravings
- Mood swings
- Autoimmune conditions
- Migraines
- Acne
- Unexplained pain
- Brain Fog
What Is a Functional Health Consultation?
If your health problems stem from an imbalanced gut microbiome, you may wonder what to do next. Unfortunately, most doctors don’t even consider checking your functional health during regular appointments. Instead, they may send you home with one or more prescription medications that help relieve your symptoms but don’t necessarily cure the underlying problem.
At Ignite Med Spa & Wellness, we don’t want just to mask your symptoms. Instead, we want to identify what’s going wrong with your body so we can help you heal yourself from the inside out. When you visit us for a consultation, we’ll collect information about your past medical history, genetics, nutrition habits, and more. We’ll learn as much as we can about your lifestyle to identify possible causes for your functional health problems. Our goal is to help you restore equilibrium within your body and mind so you can live without disease symptoms.
How to Prepare for a Functional Health Consultation
It is important that you bring a 3-day food diary to your functional health consultation. Make it as accurate as possible to your normal day-to-day eating habits, even if you’re embarrassed about what you consume. We need to get an accurate idea of how you eat to determine how to help you improve your gut microbiome and functional health.
Please also bring a list of all medications you’re currently taking, including supplements.
Laboratory results from the prior 12 months will be helpful in determining the next best step and ensure we don’t repeat tests unnecessarily.
