How Laser Skin Resurfacing Works Using the Erbium Laser

Erbium laser resurfacing treatments remove superficial and moderately deep lines and wrinkles from the skin. The laser’s energy targets the water in your skin cells, vaporizing the cells. This laser is gentler than CO2 but more intense than ablative lasers. The Erbium laser results in a narrower area of heating adjacent tissues. How to Prepare for Your Erbium Laser Facial

Before your laser facial using the Erbium laser, you will want to avoid heavy sun exposure and deep facial peels for about 4 weeks beforehand. This includes chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and other laser resurfacing treatments. It is also a good idea to speak with your Erbium laser facial provider about the use of topical treatments, including Vitamin C, Retin-A, or glycolic acid, before the treatment.

Erbium Laser Facial Aftercare*

After the laser facial, a non-stick dressing is applied to the treatment site(s) for a full 24 hours. After you remove the dressing, you will commit to a “gentle” skincare routine that includes cleansing your skin 2 to 5 times a day with saline or diluted vinegar solution, depending on your provider’s recommendations. After that, you will use an emollient ointment like Aquaphor to keep the skin moist and reduce the risk of scabbing.

Patients can expect their skin to peel for about 7-14 days. You should expect some downtime as the peeling is most extreme in the first three days after treatment. In addition, you need to avoid the sun for at least 24 hours after this treatment, if not more. A post-treatment skin care regimen is available for purchase after such treatment.
